Is there where Everton need to improve this summer?

Everton have had a mixed season but it is surely one that many fans would like to forget.

After they recently managed to improve their season with a six-game unbeaten run they managed to get themselves carried away and put in a dismal performance against relegation-threatened side Aston Villa last weekend. A disappointing first half display left many fans wondering how the same team could have pulled of a fantastic win only a few weeks before against Manchester United.

The Toffees currently sit in 11th place and it looks like the summer transfer window will be an interesting one for them. The club has been hit with injury crisis after injury crisis this term, which has left manager Roberto Martinez with a limited squad for most of the season.

Unlike many clubs in the Premier League speculation of who may be coming in and going out at the club has been fairly quiet, but there are a few players Martinez and his scouts have already started looking at as potential signings.

The full-backs have greatly improved and many fans are desperate to see another striker brought into the club, but there is one area where Everton really need to improve and that is in winning balls in the air. Everton’s strike force are all extremely weak at winning headers in the box, with only 11 of their 46 goals coming from headers. In the past, the Toffees have been known for having the original and best number nine in English football but it seems this iconic position is dying out at Goodison Park.

The club’s current number nine Aroune Kone is in a serious barren spell and Everton need to look at someone to improve their aerial threat in the box. The Liverpool based club have been linked with Crystal Palace’s Yannick Bolasie, but the Eagles manager Alan Pardew has said he values his star man at £45million, which is way out of most club’s valuation of the player, let alone Everton’s.

The 25-year-old could be just what Everton needs, thought, as he is known for being an extremely versatile player. The Congo international has so far played in four different roles for Palace this season (left midfielder, left forward, attacking midfielder and centre forward) and it is in that last two roles that Bolasie could prove most valuable for Everton as he is known for his strength in the air.

Everton’s main problem is that only four goals have been scored from corners this season, which highlights just how poor their aerial skill is in the Premier League. Many teams have strong defenders who can keep the strikers at check but Everton do not actually have a player who can contend with the height and strength of the other team’s back four.

Everton have a lot of work to do over the summer and this season has become one they desperately need to learn from. After getting in to Europe, many fans thought it could be the start of a new, stronger beginning for the club but things have taken a dramatic step in the wrong direction.

Martinez will be a busy man this summer.
