Chris Hughton wants safety over style

Norwich boss Chris Hughton says that he is not bothered how his team stay in the Premier League, so long as they do.

The Canaries claimed a point in their weekend clash with Southampton, a result which moves them nine points clear of the drop zone.

However, with nine games left to play and with the likes of Wigan and Aston Villa finding some form, much can change during the run in.

There were a few noises of discontent at Carrow Road after the final whistle on Saturday, with Grant Holt’s missed penalty frustrating some members of the crowd.

But, Hughton is adamant that his focus is on keeping Norwich safe by any means possible:

“Our responsibility to our supporters is to make sure we are in this division next season,” he is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“But we are what we are – we are a team who are striving to be the best we can, and if we were good at both ends then we would probably be six or seven places higher and pushing for Europe.”

Aside from 4-0 and 5-0 losses to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively, Norwich have improved their defensive record since the start of 2013.

But, goals have been slightly harder to come by, with only seven since the turn of the year.

New signing Kei Kamara has looked impressive, and Hughton believes the man on loan from Sporting Kansas City adds another dimension to their attack:

“Kei gave us something different, but when you are playing two up front you have got to make sure you are giving them good enough service in the areas which are going to hurt the opposition enough.”
