Tottenham Hotspur boss hopes team learned from 5-1 Dortmund humbling
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is hoping that his young team learned a lesson after their 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League on Thursday, with the fixture ending 5-1 on aggregate, Daily Mail reports.
Pochettino had a tough task in overturning a huge three-goal deficit at White Hart Lane, but then a brace from red-hot striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended any hopes of qualification to the quarter-finals.
However, the Argentine manager was trying to look at the positives from the game, stating that if he manages to complete his task of leading the club to the Champions League next season, Spurs will be facing opponents of this calibre much more regularly.
“I’m very disappointed we’re out of the Europa League but we need to recognise we played against a very good team (playing at) a Champions League level, because Borussia Dortmund is one of the best teams in Europe,” he said.
“I think we improved a lot, learned a lot from last week in Germany. We competed and we need to take positives.
“We have a lot of young players that need to feel what it means to compete in Europe and I think for the team it was a good test and we can take positive things.”
Spurs at least came away with a consolation goal from Korean ace Son Heung-min, but Pochettino knew the tie was practically over when Aubameyang’s long range effort rifled in to the back of the net.
He added: “Your expectation is to turn the tie but against a very good team it was difficult. We tried to score and they score an unbelievable goal from Aubameyang and this killed a little bit our possibility to come into the tie.”
Pochettino’s men will look to catch Leicester City at the top of the league when they host Bournemouth in their next match.
